STATEMENT JOHN FITZMAURICE 2020

In my work, I attempt to use an inclusive approach. Often I include art-historical references such as Synthetic Cubism and Abstract Expressionism which I use not as appropriations but for their playful effects and humour.

I search for a motif, something that gets the painting going, by making sets of unstable marks and jarring juxtapositions. From these, interactions and correspondences appear.

There are often ghosts of recognisable objects in the marks, and I often enjoy making comparisons and connections between them and between the abstract and representational ideas they might provoke.

Recently I've been returning to the human figure and how I can connect to its history from Piccaso to Amy Sillmann.and the present.
